Elmer Dunlavy Jr., 84, of Urbana, passed away on Tuesday, March 18, 2014 in Vancrest of Urbana. He was born in Urbana, OH, on September 16, 1929, to the late Elmer Jas. And Lucy May (Jenkins) Dunlavy. On April 22, 1951, he married the former Mary Jane Swisher and she survives along with their children: a daughter, Debra Dunlavy of Port Charlotte, FL, and sons, Rick (Vicki) Dunlavy of West Liberty, Tim (Penelope) Dunlavy of Urbana, Richard (Tracy) Dunlavy of Cable; grandchildren, Shawn Fraley, Tommy Dunlavy, Joshua (Jessica) Barger, Emily (Jeremy) Bishop, Sophia Dunlavy, Dustin (Amy) Dunlavy, Derick Dunlavy, Jessica Dunlavy, Tyler Dunlavy and Paige (Nick) Keeran; 9 great-grandchildren, Dallas and Logan Fraley, Lucas Dunlavy, Maxwell Dunlavy, Layne and Reese Barger, Mallory Bishop, and Hadley and Harper Keeran. He is also survived by 2 sisters, Joann Wood of Clermont, FL and Linda McClain of Urbana; 4 brothers, Paul and partner Roger Hutton of Cincinnati, Robert (Brenda) of St. Paris, Donald (Patricia) of Urbana, and Danny (Shirley) of Urbana; and numerous nieces and nephews. Elmer, a 1948 graduate of Urbana High School, served our country in the United States Army during the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1951. He worked for 25 years at International Harvester before retiring in 1989. Elmer was a member of Harmony Lodge #8 F&AM, Antioch Shrine, Champaign County Shrine Club, Scottish Rite Valley of Dayton and Champaign County Scottish Rite, Pearce-Kerns American Legion Post 120 and Spriggs-Wing VFW Post 5451, where he served as commander from June 25, 2006 to July 1, 2007. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, March 21, 2014 in the WALTER & SMITH FUNERAL HOME, Urbana, where a Masonic service will be held at 7 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 22, 2014 in the funeral home with Pastor Karen Montgomery officiating. Burial will follow in Kings Creek Cemetery, Urbana. Military honors will be provided by American Legion Post 120. A special thank you to the staff at Vancrest and Community Mercy Hospice for their care of Elmer.
