Philip John Smith

SMITH, Philip John “Phil” age 87 of Urbana passed away Tuesday, October 25, 2022 in Springfield Regional Hospital after years of failing health. He was born on January 3, 1935 in Urbana, to the late Charles John and Margaret (Malone) Smith. Phil owned and operated Smith’s carry out in Urbana for many years and retired from Grimes Manufacturing. He was a lifelong member of St. Mary Catholic Church. He enjoyed bowling, golf and watching Ohio State Football. Phil is survived by his wife of 69 years, Marlene (Schafer) Smith; his children: Denise (Jim) Smith Karg, Philip (Cathy) Smith and Cody Smith; grandchildren: Shawn Karg, Jamie (Keisha) Karg, Megan Burchett, Wesley Hartman, Kadie (Travis) Amsbaugh, Caitlin Karg, Lucas Karg, and Brycen Karg as well as great-grandchildren, James and Patrick Karg. Phil was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Fred Smith in 1990 and several aunts, uncles and cousins. He will be missed by all who knew him. A graveside service will be held on Friday, October 28, 2022 at Oak Dale Cemetery beginning at 1:00 p.m. Father Jacob Lindle officiating.
