Betty E. Hunter

February 20, 1923 — January 18, 2017

Betty Ex Hunter, age 93, passed away on Wednesday, January 18, 2017 in Hilliard, Ohio. She was born on February 20, 1923 in Findlay, Ohio to the late Anthony C. and Bessie L. (Wade) Ex. Betty graduated from Findlay High School and went on to attend Miami University, majoring in Fine Arts. After graduating in 1945, she ventured to Cleveland where she started her career as a Fashion Illustrator for the Higbee Company. In 1952, she met and married Richard Hunter from Urbana.
In Urbana, she worked as a Fashion Illustrator for the Phillips Company. She branched out into advertising work for other stores, including Wrens, Rikes, and Lazarus. In 1964, she received an offer to teach art at Urbana Junior High (as long as she would consent to getting her degree in Art Education by adding the necessary courses of study to her BA degree.)
The next 20 years she spent teaching art to junior high school students and enjoyed it. “These were the days of improvision. Our supplies were unbelievably low, but our imaginations were fabulous. Creativity abounded”. After retirement, she enrolled in art classes at the Springfield Museum of Art, specializing in portraiture and sculpture. Her grandchildren served as great models, sometimes willingly. She has won numerous awards for her sculptures.
Along with her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Hunter; sister, Dulcie Marvin; brother, Wade Ex; and sister-in-law, Marilyn Hone.
Betty is survived by her son, Tony and his wife Janene; grandchildren, Claire Elizabeth (Andrew), Kelsey Anne, and Davidson Ex.
