Gerald Askew passed away at his home February 12th with his son Gregory in his presence. Gerald (Jerry) was born October 15, 1934, to Helen Askew. She later married Harold White, who was Jerry’s stepfather and a major influence in Jerry’s life.
Jerry was an incredible athlete in high school basketball and baseball. He held the highest county basketball scoring record for half of a century. He graduated from Urbana Local School in 1952
He had his first dairy 4-H heifer project at the age of nine. From that point forward, he became enthusiastic about dairy cows, maintaining a herd of five throughout his high school years.
He enlisted in the National Guard in 1958 for three years and was in a Special Forces unit. He later started a dairy herd and became a dairy cattle broker. Eventually, he owned a dairy herd at his home farm, a herd west of Urbana, Ohio, and later a herd in Wisconsin.
He was known for numerous dairy cattle sales. He gradually became an international dairy cattle broker with customers in El Salvador, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, Canada, Taiwan, Peru, and Iran.
He is survived by his son, Gregory, brother-in-law Richard Goddard, and special care-giver Valerie Watson.
