Mable Arms

April 15, 1923 — January 1, 2018

On Monday, January 1, Mable Arms, 94, left her worldly New Year’s start to begin her eternity in Paradise with her Lord and Savior.
She was born April 15, 1923 to John David Lemaster and Rebecca Jane (Sexton) Lemaster, in Jenkins, Kentucky. One of 8 children, she began using her God-given gift of care-giving early in life, as she helped look after her younger siblings. Later, when her father’s coal-mining work moved the family to Greenrock, KY, she would open her heart a little larger still when she met the sweetheart of her life, Thomas B. Arms, at a local church and school. Married on April 19, 1939, the couple quickly grew their family to include 5 children within eight years and hard-working Mable’s care-giving role quickly grew, as well. While Thomas worked hard at the coal mine, she worked hard helping the family run a bathhouse for local miners and providing for her family at home. She tended the family’s gardens, feeding the family with the food that was grown; and honed her skills in sewing, cooking, canning, finances and keeping their home clean, all while caring for their five children. Not being known as one to complain, she was heard to say, “If you can’t change the situation, change your attitude.”
Never one to be wasteful, Mable was a good steward with all that the Lord put in her care - from the material things to the beloved family members through the years. Many happy hours were spent playing games from Checkers to Aggravation and sweet memories made from the many meals at family gatherings she blessed us with. Known as a loving wife and mother, to myself and many others, she was in our hearts, simply as, Grandma and will be greatly missed.
Leaving behind sweet memories, her life is celebrated by her sons, Art Arms (former daughter-in-law Lil Arms) and Jerry (Jacque) Arms; daughters, Margaret (Butch) Brown and Lorraine (Tom) Reid; daughter-in-law, Edith Arms; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; her sister, Charlotte (Randall) Lacy; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Myrtle, Clara, Margaret and Dorothy; brothers, Junior and Charles; husband, Thomas; son, Frank; and grandsons, John Walter and Matthew Arms.
A visitation will be held on Friday, January 5, 2018 at Walter & Lewis Funeral Home, Urbana from 1:00-2:00 p.m. with her funeral beginning at 2:00 p.m. officiated by Pastor Aaron Samples. Burial to follow at Oak Dale Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes memorial contributions be made to Grace Baptist Church, Ohio’s Hospice of Dayton or Mercy McAuley Center in Mable’s honor.
