Mary Charlene Kerkhove, known affectionately as Charlene, was born on June 23, 1941, in Inglewood, California. She graced the world with her quirky spirit and an unwavering zest for life, qualities that endeared her to all who knew her. Charlene passed away peacefully on April 20, 2026, in Urbana, Ohio, leaving behind a legacy filled with love, learning, and faith.
Charlene’s journey through life was marked by a deep commitment to education and service. She received her bachelor’s degree in education from Purdue University, a foundation that launched her fulfilling career as a high school English and Spanish teacher. Her dedication inspired her students to enjoy language, encouraging them with kindness and humor. However, one of Charlene’s proudest accomplishments was her baptism as one of Jehovah’s Witness in 1974. From then on, she spent her life studying the Bible, sharing her faith with others, and attending meetings with fellow believers, courageously and compassionately sharing God’s word in both English and Spanish. Her faith was not just a belief but a way of life that brought her life meaning and purpose.
Born Mary Charlene Servis, she was lovingly surrounded by family throughout her life and holds a treasured place in their hearts. She is survived by her daughter Susan Spaeth; her son Philip Kerkhove and his wife Bridget; her daughter Patricia Zapp and her husband Matthew; and her grandchildren Kaitlynd French and her husband Donnie, Riley Zapp, and Zoie Zapp. The joy of her life extended into the next generations with great-grandchildren Myles, Olivia, Dexter, and many nieces and nephews who carry her memory forward. Charlene also cherished her siblings: Estin Servis, Kenneth Servis and his wife Harriet, Wilma Fultz, Cathy Saik and her husband Rich, and her sister-in-law Peggy Servis.
Charlene's family fondly remembers those who passed away before her: her parents Edward and Mary Elizabeth (Swanson) Servis and her brother Donald Servis. Their memories, alongside her own, form a tapestry of love and legacy that transcends time.
A memorial gathering to honor Charlene’s life will be held on May 2, 2026, beginning at 3:00 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, located at 700 State Route 54, Urbana, Ohio. This event will provide a much-needed moment for friends and family to come together, sharing stories and comfort as they celebrate a life truly well-lived.
